Castle Durrow is delighted to offer a series of guides for our guests to enjoy on their visit to the castle. For users of iPhone or Android, we have developed a series of guides under the well known walking app, EveryTrail Pro. Don’t have such a device? Don’t worry, we’ve also got a free handbook available at reception with full details for you.

A variety of endurance levels is offered in these guides:

  1. Castle Durrow Grounds Guide – an easy garden stroll. 30 minutes.
  2. Durrow Heritage Guide – a leisurely walk through the village. 50 minutes.
  3. Dunmore Loop Guide – a 9.2 mile walk around the village. 4.5 hours.
  4. Durrow Leafy Loop Guide – 16 mile walk around the valley. 6 hours.
  5. Elephant and Castle Bicycle Trail – a 15 mile cycle ride on a vintage High Nelly.
  6. Durrow & Environs Guide – find the best attractions within 30 miles of Durrow.

The idea for the innovative new Durrow Guides App of the walks came about when the Stokes resolved to share the character of the castle, and of Durrow itself, with as wide an audience as possible, using new technology. Peter explains, ‘Durrow is unique, with plenty of colourful characters and interesting hidden gems. We were looking for a clever way of allowing visitors to get a real flavour of the place, as well as enjoying the local walks. The App is the perfect solution as it provides information on everything that’s on offer, at the touch of a button. Of course, alternatively, visitors can simply sit by the fire in the comfort of our lounge and be regaled by local voices telling some great stories, all to be found on the audio section of the App.

Each guide consists of an on-screen map, with text, images and audio clips about all the places of interest en route. The audio clips are entertaining and informative, using local voices to tell visitors about their area. The App guides are a bit like mini radio documentaries about what Durrow has to offer. The way-marked walks, the ‘Leafy Loop’ and ‘Dunmore Loop’, take you through beautiful, unspoiled countryside, past woodland and the Erkina and Nore rivers Besides the countryside walks, details of the local champions of the area are included as well. Two of Ireland’s most original museums – the High Nelly Museum and the Fishing and Shooting Museum; details of the annual All Ireland Scarecrow Festival; Sheppards Auction Rooms, with its international profile and elite clientele; the Nore river – one of the only rivers in the country where you might find a pearl mussel, and even the story of how Durrow apparently gave Ireland its only native born Pope…

With the guides, you can take your pick from leisurely strolls through the village or Castle Durrow grounds, a fifteen mile cycle ride on a vintage High Nelly, or, for the more serious walkers, the nine or the sixteen mile walks around the valley. There’s also a guide to Durrow and its Environs showing the visitor the best attractions within 30 miles of the village.

The App can be downloaded onto iPhone or Android. Just download the ‘EveryTrail Pro App’ and look for “Durrow Guides’ then download the guide you wish to take. The EveryTrail Pro App is the leading walking app of its kind and, once the App has been downloaded, it can be used offline, so that no roaming charges will be incurred.
