The House & Its Heritage
Located in the heart of Ireland, Castle Durrow is one of the country's hidden gems. Built in the early 18th century as the private residence of the Flower family, later Viscounts Ashbrook, the house has been carefully restored by Peter and Shelly Stokes, preserving its original Georgian character while creating a welcoming country house hotel.
Each room has been individually designed and furnished by Peter and Shelly, with carefully sourced antiques, period furniture and family heirlooms found throughout the house.
One of Castle Durrow's most remarkable original features is the grand cantilevered staircase in the west wing, illuminated by a magnificent stained-glass window believed to date from around 1860. Thought to have been commissioned to celebrate a marriage, the window depicts the Seven Ages of Man, inspired by William Shakespeare's As You Like It.
Within the lower section of the window are the initials WF and AM, representing William Flower and Augusta Marton, alongside the Flower family motto, Mens Conscia Recti, meaning “A mind conscious of what is right.”
