Donaghmore Workhouse and Agricultural Museum
Donaghmore Workhouse and Agricultural Museum
Twenty minutes from the castle, Donaghmore Workhouse is a sobering and carefully kept record of nineteenth-century rural Ireland.
The workhouse was introduced into Ireland as part of the English Poor Law system in 1838. The British government saw the system as the most cost effective way of tackling the desperate state of poverty in Ireland.
The site also holds an agricultural museum. Guided tours are by prior arrangement.
