Oriental Rooms

Situated on the second floor of the main house, tucked beneath the eaves of Castle Durrow, our Oriental Rooms are among the most distinctive bedrooms in the house.

During the restoration of the castle, beautiful old black oak beams were uncovered supporting the roof. Rather than conceal these original features, the Stokes family chose to incorporate them into the design of the bedrooms, creating a collection of individually decorated rooms inspired by the elegance and exoticism of traditional Chinoiserie.

Each room features richly patterned Oriental wallpaper, antique furniture sourced from overseas and carefully chosen decorative pieces, reflecting a time when treasures imported from China were highly prized in grand Irish country houses.

The elevated position of these rooms offers wonderful views across the surrounding countryside. North-facing bedrooms overlook the historic obelisk and the entrance to the castle, while south-facing rooms enjoy views of the gardens and the Ballagh Hills beyond.

With their exposed oak beams, distinctive furnishings and individual character, our Oriental Rooms offer a charming and memorable place to stay at Castle Durrow.

Please note: Our Oriental Rooms are located on the second floor of the historic main house and are accessible by several flights of stairs. There is no lift at Castle Durrow, and these rooms may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility or those travelling with prams.
